Chase felt he had composed himself well enough to talk to Sonya and Marilyn, but they were his friends. They cared about him. Now he had to talk to Priscilla, the monster’s daughter. That was how he had begun to think about the reverend: the monster. Chase couldn’t reconcile his feelings about the reverend with his feelings about the creepers. He had conceived of a philosophy that allowed him to dispose of them. They were dead, they were not what they had been before. But the reverend still talked and moved around and interacted. As dangerous as Chase felt the reverend had become, he couldn’t just kill him in cold blood. But he wasn’t entirely sure the reverend was still all human, either.

When Chase at last found Priscilla she was talking to Josh and Danny on the loading dock. As he approached, Priscilla spoke. “You talked to my father. Did you come to terms with your place here and the teachings you will have to follow?”

Chase had been thinking. “We reached an understanding. I believe we need to be here, Sonya, Marilyn and I. For our sakes. And we will find our Way within the Way that is being taught here.”

Priscilla nodded. “Then you understand you will be Blessed.”

“I understand. We have come to you and we are ready to find that path. But we are also here to serve the children. We want to help them, to make sure they are ready. If they die before being blessed, then no purpose will have been served. We’re afraid they will starve before becoming, before finding the Way.” Chase knew that if Priscilla thought a mission to get more food were her idea, she would be more likely to allow them to leave. He felt like he was floating a hail-Mary pass out there, begging for her to intercept it and run with it. But it was all part of his plan.

He studied her as she turned this over in her mind. Her hair had been all blond at some point in the past, but he guessed she hadn’t had access or inclination to dye it again, so the dark roots were showing. Her face was wide with prominent cheekbones that were visible now, but he thought this had been a recent development. Her face was pretty in a mean sort of way. But. It may have been the baggy clothes she wore. It may have been something in the way she walked, a slow, deliberate gait. But mostly it was something in the way she spoke. She had been overweight. And this may have been what tipped the scales in favor of allowing them to go out. She had been a heavy girl in the recent past. She loved to eat.

“My father says we shouldn’t be thinking about ourselves, our bodies. We aren’t long here. But he does feel differently about the children. He saved them, after all, from becoming Blessed on the way here. So okay. Go get more food.
